SHORT COURSE ON RIVER FLOW MODELING WITH HEC-RAS
The workshop's purpose is to present the basic features of the HEC-RAS software. We focus on the modern and stable versions of the family 6+. The workshop will be in the format of interactive classes. During the meeting, the working models will be prepared using real spatial data.
The workshop consists of two blocks. The first is devoted to advanced 1D modeling with extensive use of GIS tools. The detailed plan of this part is presented below. The class will finish by preparing a simplified flood hazard map.
Block 1 (1.5 hours): 1D modeling of flooding
- Presentation of GIS data
- Configuration of GIS module in HEC-RAS
- Preparation of 1D geometry
- Example computations of 1D steady flow
- Example computations of 1D unsteady flow
- Export of results to GIS software, e.g. QGIS
- Processing of flood hazard map in QGIS
In the second block, we will focus on 2D modeling. We will analyze the flow under the bridge and determine the safety of inland navigation. Finally, we will prepare a map of hazardous zones along the waterway. The detailed plan of the second part is presented below.
Block 2 (1.5 hours): 2D modeling of flow under a bridge
- Presentation of GIS data
- Configuration of GIS module in HEC-RAS
- Preparation of 2D geometry for base model
- Example computations of minimum flow in 2D model
- Visualization of results for 2D flow
- Export of results to GIS software, e.g. QGIS
- Processing of navigation risk map in QGIS
To fully participate in the workshop and gain as much as it is possible following requirements should be satisfied:
- The participants should bring their own laptops with MS Windows operating system.
- The necessary software to be installed is the newest version of the HEC-RAS software, supposedly the version from line 6+. The HEC-RAS 2025 will not be tested because of its early stage of development.
- The installation of any GIS software is also necessary. The classes will be presented with the current release of QGIS. ArcGIS Pro is also welcomed. The participants may use any other software on their own responsibility.
- The connection to the internet is also necessary.
- The participants are also expected to download the necessary data before the workshop. The links to the data will be sent before the conference.
